Surrey and E&W Sussex councils have applied to the Government for more powers and control over joint budgets, as a ‘super-county’ like Greater Manchester. If this succeeds, some environmental functions may be delegated to boroughs.
Since the abandonment of Airtrack and the linked concept of Staines as a business centre for Heathrow, we have seen a swing from offices to housing in Staines, with many schemes built or intended as offices being rethought as flats, e.g. Majestic site, Ash House. Network Rail have produced a feasibility study called Southern Rail Access to Heathrow. Several of its options involve reviving Airtrack. If this comes about, the pendulum may swing back to offices in Staines town centre.
The origami swan statue (stainless steel sculpture) in the Memorial Gardens has had one of the cygnets detached by a vandal, left on the path and subsequently removed. Rumour has it, that it was taken to the nearby Conservative Club for safe-keeping. Does anyone know where it is?

Following comments received on Twitter (@StainesSociety) we have asked Network Rail to clear the rubbish west of Station Path.
We have been contacted about a proposal to erect the pictured sign on Staines Bridge. It has been suggested that we might apply for permission to display a Middlesex county sign, on Staines Bridge. The River Thames marks the boundary line of the historic county of Middlesex and therefore the sign would be displayed after crossing the river on entry to Staines, perhaps above the twinning sign. We would welcome your views please.
According to Wikipedia: – Middlesex was established in the Anglo-Saxon system from the territory of the Middle Saxons. The historic county included land stretching north of the River Thames from 3 miles east to 17 miles west of the City of London with the rivers Colne and Lea and a ridge of hills as the other boundaries. You may be aware, the London mile stone sits outside Sainsburys on The Causeway.
