About our Social Programme
There is a small social programme of events but we would be happy to extend our social activities, if we had more active committee members. Please use contact us or come along to a committee meeting if you are interested in trying it out, we meet on the 2nd Monday of every month at 7.30pm, usually at the Treasurers house.
Summer Tea Party
This event started in the days of Staines Town Society, Open Gardens but soon became popular as a relaxed afternoon of tea & homemade cakes in the former Chairman’s delightful garden. The event continues annually, usually scheduled for late May or early June and in recent years we’ve enjoyed tea at a member’s garden on the riverside near Penton Hook Lock and at the garden of St Peter’s Church. This is an opportunity to show off your baking skills, as we always welcome homemade cakes.
Winter Dinner
This is a cheerful event to brighten up that dull bit after Christmas an evening at a local restauant, open to all members and friends usually held during February. In 2019 (prior to Covid restrictions) we enjoyed an evening at The Swan, in The Hythe, just over Staines Bridge. The menu and full details are sent to full members with our Christmas/New Year card.
Wassail Party
In the past we traditionally held a Wassail party in early December, with a warming drink, mince pies and stollen, plus apple bobbing and a “bring & buy” stall. Wassailing has been associated with Christmas and New Year as far back as the 1400s. It was a way of passing on good wishes among family and friends. The word ‘wassail‘ comes from the Anglo-Saxon phrase ‘waes hael’, which means ‘good health’. If you are interested in re-instating this event by volunteering to help us run a Wassail party, please contact us.
