There is a new application (17/00810/FUL) to demolish the derelict listed building at 25-27 Clarence Street, beside the Colne, and replace it with a bland imitation containing a ground floor shop with a 1-bed flat and 5 tiny bedsits above. The application is seriously inadequate, as it contains no details of materials or design of doors and windows, which must be correctly specified if it is to fit in with the rest of this listed Georgian terrace. The wooden face and brackets on the front of the existing building will be lost unless a rescue can be arranged.

Surrey CC has announced their intention to find ‘commercial partners’ to develop about 15 sites for housing, including the Oast House buildings in Kingston Road. We have grieved to see it unused since the Adult Education centre closed about 10 years ago, but are apprehensive about the nature of the development. This is one of the last complete brewery complexes left in the south east and it should be treated with respect. The car park may also disappear, leading to more overspill parking in nearby streets.
