Spelthorne Borough Council hosted an Air Quality Forum on Monday 20 April 2015.
The immediate cause of our poor air quality in Spelthorne is road traffic, with the highest pollution areas around the M25 Junction 13 and M3 Junction 1, both of which lie within the borough. The fact that our neighbour Heathrow is the major cause of most of this road traffic, makes us wonder if anything at all could really be done to improve the air quality in Spelthorne? The only thing we know for certain is that despite the available air quality statistics that Spelthorne BC has measured, it is one of only two local boroughs near Heathrow (the other is Slough), who continue to support the case for a 3rd runway, which would inevitably result in more road and aircraft pollution.
Apparently, some of the more dangerous components of air pollution are emitted by aircraft during the first thousand feet after take-off, but are generally thought to be blown away by the wind or brought down to ground by rain. If there is no wind or rain, Heathrow becomes smog bound by air pollutants and as a result of this, the weather forecasters have recently introduced warnings those living nearby, who suffer from asthma or similar disorders, to stay indoors.
