The tide of planning applications for small flats continues.  The Government has published a list of legal minimum sizes, e.g. 50 sq.m. for a 1-bed flat and 70 sq.m. for a 2-bed flat.  Most new flats will be at or only marginally above these minimum sizes, and local authorities have no power to insist on any increase.  Conversions from offices are exempt from the standards, and flats in them can be even smaller.  We have heard the argument that these very small units enable more people to get on the housing ladder, but worry about the accumulation of poor quality housing in future.
