The delightful and much loved sculpture of The Five Swimmers by David Wynne, which was gifted to Staines by the Queen when the Elmsleigh Centre was opened in 1980 and now resides in the Memorial Gardens, was brutally vandalised on Saturday night.

The Five Swimers is irreplaceable and without a doubt the most outstanding piece of art work owned by Spelthorne, following repair, it would be sensible to take the opportunity to re-locate it and make it safe from vandalism. The current plinth is much too short, it needs to be properly displayed and a sculpture of this quality needs to be protected from vandalism.

Today an enforcement officer from Spelthone Borough Council’s “Street Scene” collected the detatched figure (see photo above) for safe-keeping, until a repair can be arranged.

WE LOOK FORWARD TO THE RETURN OF THIS MUCH LOVED SCULPTURE.
