Majestic House, Staines Steak House, Roni Hair and the former main Post Office all long since demolished, were previously located on this site.
The following comments are addressed to Cascade a PR company, who act on behalf of the developers. This is the first stage – a “public” consultation, prior to submission of their planning application.
The consultation document, which was sparsely delivered, describes a scheme, which is far too large and totally out of scale with this modest riverside town. An empty site is almost less bad than having tall, brutal blocks looming over the High Street and surely, new shops cannot be a priority when existing shop premises stand empty?
The Town Society would prefer to see a smaller scale development, with reasonable size, good quality apartments, not the usual minimum-size boxes.
Safety (especially after dark) should be an important factor in the siting of the new public square, which will need careful consideration as it’s not in the main town centre, we would not wish to see a “no-go area” created.
It is hoped that proper facilities will be incorporated into the plans for storage & collection of refuse/recycling, laundry, bike & push chair storage plus green amenity space including a children’s play area.
The illustrations and questionnaire, supplied on behalf of the architects working for the London Square Team by their PR company, Cascade, were sparsely distributed and are not encouraging – we demand a better quality design.
