The Staines Town Society objects strongly to any agreement for prior demolition for this important building in this prime location; prior approval must be required for a proposed: Demolition of Buildings in respect of Debenhams.
It would be premature to demolish this fine building, prior to a decision on the planning application.
In particular, we believe that after demolition what remains will be so unsightly that sadly there’ll probably be a presumption in favour of accepting whatever standard/quality of building is offered, in order to improve the appearance of the empty building site, in this prominent location.
The prominence & importance of this building is very clearly illustrated in the aerial view photograph of the High Street showing the beautiful sweeping curve of the Debenhams building, (which can be found within the Future High Streets, Design & Access Statement) – this amazing building was George Cole’s last commission, it really does warrant inclusion on the Locally Listed buildings in Spelthorne.
In the meantime, will Spelthorne BC please consider sponsoring some suitable window displays, perhaps some items from the Museum to bring some interest?
It is also very likely of course, that there will be archaeological remains on site, probably dating back to Roman times, as there was with the Barclays Bank site further along Staines High Street.
