Some of you will have visited Bellway Homes’ exhibition of their proposals for the site on 19 October. We were appalled at the size and scale of the proposed scheme, even worse than we had feared, 210 flats, in a 12 storey tower looming over the end of Staines Bridge like a lost lighthouse or gigantic Dalek, and a big 7 storey block behind it. There are some good points of design detail, and the scheme is set back a little from the river and has an interesting path through the middle; if it were half the size it might be quite acceptable. It only has 140 car spaces for 210 flats, just to add to the problems caused by the loss of the existing car park.
The proposals can be seen at www.bellwaybridgestreet.co.uk, and there will be another exhibition at the Mercure (formerly the Packhorse) in Thames Street, 3-8pm on 24 November 2015
