An outline application for the Majestic House site, the big empty space north of the High Street just east of the iron bridge, was approved on 29 July. Instead of making a new application, the developers asked to vary the conditions of the previously agreed scheme. Doing it this way is cheaper, as it allows them to avoid the Community Infrastructure Levy, and also it’s harder for the Planning Committee to refuse. The chief variation is that, within the same total floor space, the building will contain about 300 flats instead of offices. A full application is expected soon.
Indicative, i.e. not guaranteed, drawings show a big block of flats and car parking on the former Post Office corner, and an even taller block along the back of the site. They can be found in Appendix D1 in the documents attached to the planning application 15/00739/RVC on SBC website.
